Having trained and worked widely in the field of psychotherapy, I have gradually developed a universal approach to my work, combining Jungian, Lacanian, Humanistic and Psychoanalytic conceptualisations of the practice of therapy. I have always believed the various psychoanalytical schools of thought have been hampered by their non-inclusiveness and rather than there being one ‘correct’ way to practice psychotherapy, the client should dictate the course of treatment.
As a qualified Naturopath, my specialisation is in the relationship between diet, eating disorders, low mood and lethargy.
I have experience in helping young people of between 13 and 21 years old within their emotional health. I have worked in Dr Barnando’s and other children’s homes as well as schools.
I am able to conduct Brief Solution Focused Therapy which is a 4-6 weeks intensive process for seeking solutions to a specific issue.
What is EMDR?
Eye
Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR and CBT, take place in an atmosphere of warmth and sensitivity. EMDR is used for clients
experiencing emotional trauma, loss and anxiety. The first phase is a history taking
session during which the therapist assesses the clients' readiness for EMDR and
develops a treatment plan. We identify possible targets for EMDR processing. These
include recent distressing events, current situations that elicit
emotional disturbance, related historical incidents, and the development of specific
skills and behaviours that will be needed by the client in the future
situations. These involve the client identifying the most vivid visual image related
to the memory (if available), a negative belief about one's self, related emotions and
body sensations. The client also identifies a preferred positive belief. The validity
of the positive belief is rated, as is the intensity of the emotions. After EMDR
processing, clients generally report that the emotional distress related to the memory
has been eliminated, or greatly decreased, and that they have gained
important cognitive insights, importantly, these emotional and cognitive changes
usually result in spontaneous behavioral and personal change, lessening the
heightened emotion around the traumatic incident.
What is CBT?
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy) In this 'the age of anxiety' many people seek professional help for a broad
spectrum of occupational, family, relationship or emotional problems. Depression and
anxiety are the most common of psychological problems, with around 60-70% of adults
experiencing symtoms of depression, and as many as 27% of people experiencing an
anxiety state at some time during their life. CBT is an educational approach based
on scientific principles which help the client to understand their problems, and how
these affect their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. The focus of the therapy is to
enable clients to generate solutions to problems based on techniques learned in
therapy, which are more effective than their present coping strategies. CBT can help
you in your relationships by:
*Become more in control of your life rather than
feeling powerless to change
*To help develop an inner agency, away from
codependency
*Develop better self-esteem and self-confidence
*To find a way of really listening to what your partner is trying to say
*Speaking between you can cause confusion and anger, 'she/he won't listen to me'
*Emotional Turmoil and unable to find a way to communicate with one another
''The physician must take nature as her guide and what
she then does is not so much therapy as furthering the development of the creative
seed inherent in
the patient''
C. G. Jung
