Bereavement

I particularly think that creative writing is a powerful tool to use when suffering the loss of a loved one as, for most of us, we invest all that we are into the other. Boundaries become blurred and we form merged attachments with one another. This can be so intense, for some, that it can feel unbearable to survive the loss. Writing can help us to carve out a place in ourselves, to construct and record a testimony of our lives.

In this way we learn to become the narrator of our own story, because we need to find ourselves in a story we can hold to be our own; to find our own myth.

In myth, gods and humans meet.

"The sadness in you is no longer without a name and has found its voice. When sorrow finds a name and a voice, it is like the lightning you see calling and the thunder speaking after it to say that soon the rain will fall on you again."
Laurens Van der Post (A Far-off Place)
